Department for Analytic Philosophy:

Head of the Department: Doc. PhDr. Petr Koátko, CSc.

The main research focus of the Department is the philosophy of language, the philosophy of mind and the philosophy of science. In the area of the philosophy of language, Petr Koátko works on the problems of the theory of meaning, the theory of speech-acts and the theory of reference. Together with Karel Císař and Karel Thein they also study the problems of interpretation in everyday communication, in understanding philosophical texts and art. Jiří Nosek and Juraj Hvorecký cover the area of the philosophy of mind and cognitive sciences. They look into the problems of mental states and the nature of intentional objects. Vladimír Havlík and Zuzana Parusniková work in the area of the philosophy of science. Havlík's main interest is the philosophy of physics; Parusniková analyzes critical rationalism and its offshoots and the philosophy of medicine.
The Department organizes a number of annual international symposia. The first six took place in Karlsbad and among their participants were W.V.O. Quine, D. Davidson, H. Putnam or J. Searle. The symposia now take place in Prague and the one in 2006, entitled "Interpreting Text - Interpreting Author", commemorated the centenary of Samuel Beckett. Together with the Department for Analytic Philosophy at the Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences we hold regular Czecho-Slovak colloquia; the 10th colloquium in 2006 took place in Brno and was dedicated to Kurt Gödel, who was born here 100 years ago. We were happy to welcome many participants from abroad, among them Roger Penrose. The Department also organizes annual interdisciplinary seminars bringing together philosophers, logicians, linguists, literary scientists and scientists from various fields of natural sciences to encourage a discussion about the application of some fundamental philosophical concepts and methodological principles.
Most members of the Department lecture in various universities in the Czech Republic (Charles University, West-Bohemian University, and Academy of Arts) and are invited to present their views in universities abroad (London, Cambridge, Bristol, Canterbury, Vienna, Geneva, Stockholm, Uppsala, Helsinky, Neuchatel and others).
