RETHINKING POPPER

ABSTRACTS - guidelines

Abstracts reflecting the themes embodied in the Description of conference should be sent to the address below not later than March 15. Abstracts must be written in satisfactory English, and should not simply be reports of already published work. They should not exceed 300 words in length, and should be prepared in Word for Windows, using 11pt Times New Roman or 11pt Computer Modern Roman. The title of the paper and the name(s) and affiliation(s) of the author(s) should be centred, as in the following example:

All abstracts will be refereed. Those submitting abstracts must grant to the organizers permission to reproduce their abstracts, if accepted, in the conference literature and on the conference website. Notifications of acceptance or rejection will be sent by e-mail not later than April 15. Provided that the author of an accepted abstract (or one of the authors, in the case of a paper with more than one author) registers for the conference not later than August 1st 2007, the paper will be allotted a period of 30 minutes on the conference programme (including time for discussion). Key notes will be allotted a period of 50 minutes (including time for discussion).

Sir Karl Raimund Popper

Sir Karl Raimund Popper is regarded as one of the greatest philosophers of science of the 20th century. He argued that scientific theories cannot be verified but only tentatively refuted, and that the best philosophy is about profound problems, not word meanings. He was also a social and political philosopher of considerable stature, an implacable critic of totalitarianism in all of its forms. He is best known for his vigorous defense of liberal democracy and the principles of social criticism which he considered to be inextricably linked to the functioning of the open society.

In the final analysis the activities of problem-solving and criticism unify the broad spectrum of his thought. The work of Karl Popper continues to stimulate critical thought in various areas of human intellectual endeavour.
